Columbus Day is an important day in Cigar History. Not only did Christopher Columbus discover the New World but he also discovered cigars. In 1492 when he traveled to the islands, Columbus observed the Taino [TAH-ee-no] natives smoking dried tobacco leaves wrapped in palm/plantain leaves. Columbus and his crew took some of the tobacco back to Spain where smoking the leaves became very popular. Spain opened up cigar factories in Cuba and eventually cigar rolling became perfected. So, let's light up a stogie, celebrate this great day, and thank Columbus for giving us the joy of cigars.
