Bahia Shriners averages 80 patient treatment flights per year for children who live in Lake, Sumter, Orange, Seminole, Volusia and Osceola counties, to Shriners Hospitals for Children, other than Tampa Hospital each year.
There average cost of a round trip flight for a patient, and an accompanying guardian is $500.
There is never a cost for these flights for the family. They are all funded by the Bahia Transportation Fund.
Children, with severe burn injuries requiring specialized needs, are flown to the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital for Children Burn Unit in ambulatory flights, each with accompanying doctors, nurses, and family members. Each ambulatory flight averages $17,500 each. Bahia has had 4 ambulatory fights in 2016.
In order to cover the cost of these expensive patient treatment flights, Bahia Shriners has started an ADOPT A FLIGHT PROGRAM for the Transportation Fund.
The way the program works is, Bahia Uniformed Units, Bahia Shrine Clubs, and Bahia Social Clubs can adopt a flight for $500. Flights can also be adopted by individual or corporate donations.
